This region covers the northwestern part of Death Valley National Park. Here you find Scotty's Castle, a two-story spanish villa that looks slightly out of place in this desolate surroundings. Scottys Castle actually wasn't built by Scotty (Walter Scott) but by Chicago millionaire Albert Johnson who invested in Scottys fraudulent gold mine in the Death Valley Area. Johnson eventually forgave Scott for his fraudulent scheming and they became friends. Scott was a great storyteller who used to entertain Johnson's guests at the castle and who claimed that he had built the castle for himself. That's why it became known as Scotty's Castle. In 1970 the National Park Service purchased the estate from the Gospel Foundation, a charitable organization created by Albert Johnson shortly before his death. Southwest of Scotty's Castle you can fly above Ubehebe Crater, pronounced you-bee-hee-bee, Native American for 'big basket in the rock'. The crater was formed by magma ascending close to the surface and coming in contact with groundwater. This caused a large steam explosion called a hydrovolcanic eruption.
